MARRAIGE

Equality Alabama supports any and all efforts with regard to marriage equality. Currently in our state, by statute we have law that defines marriage as limited between one man and one woman. In 2005 the legislature passed a bill to allow the citizens of this state to vote on a constitutional amendment to ban marriage civil union or anything that resembles these designations for us. This amendment will enshrine more hatred and discrimination in our constitution just as it has done with segregationist language of the past.

Equality Alabama believes that Marriage Equality is about just that, equality. This would not be special rights this would only allow us the same rights and protections as heterosexual couples.  We should never be denied access to our partners in hospitals. The benefits at our jobs should be extended to our spouses. There should never be any questions about the designations of our assets at our death. Our lives and our relationships should be held in the same regard as non-gay relationships. Currently there are over 2000 state and federal laws that do not protect our relationships like non-gay relationships.

We need your help to change the hearts and minds of the people of our state. Help them to see how these laws/amendments affect us, and our community. They need to know how this affects their neighbors, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, cousins, co-workers, supervisors and our entire state.
