Fifth Annual DAY OF EQUALITY

The events start on Tuesday, July 25, at 6:30 PM with a FREE showing of Serving in Silence starring Glenn Close as Colonel Margarethe Cammermeyer.  Ms. Close won an Emmy for her portrayal of the highly decorated Colonel’s life as the highest-ranking officer to challenge the military’s ban on gay service members.  The movie is sponsored by the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s GSSA and will be held at the Alumni Auditorium inside the Hill Center (1400 University Blvd).

Friday, July 28

On Friday, July 28th from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM is our “Meet the Speakers” party.  All of the speakers who are available for Saturday’s events will attend this free event.  It is your chance to chat with Margarethe Cammermeyer, Alex Shoor, Gunner Scott and many others.  It will be held at the Birmingham Festival Theatre entrance on 19th street south between 11th and 12th avenues in Birmingham.

The party will be followed by the Play, The Eyes of Babylon, at 8:00PM.  The play is written and performed by Jeff Key, an Alabama native.  In the play, Jeff tells his true personal story of joining the Marines following the September 11th attacks, serving the United States proudly in Iraq, realizing the war is unjust and coming out as gay to his commanding officer. There is limited seating and tickets will sell out quickly.  Call 205-933-2383 for reservations; tell them you want tickets to the July 28th performance.

10am – 2pm What the Bible does and doesn’t say about homosexuality

Rev. J.R. Finney presents a gay affirming look at the biblical passages the opposition uses against LGBT Christians.

10am – Part 1: Understanding who I am before tackling what I am.

11am - Part 2: Sodom and Gomorrah

1pm - Part 3: Paul speaks on the subject or does he?

2pm - Part 4: But it’s the law.

10am – Noon Health Issues in the aging process, Psychosocial issues in the aging process, Caring for an aging partner/friend/parents.

Glenda Elliott, Ph.D, is a licensed professional counselor, currently serving as Vice Chair of the Equality Alabama Board of Directors. She is also the current past president and co-founder of the Association of Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Issues in Counseling of Alabama, a division of the Alabama Counseling Association and the American Counseling Association. An associate professor emerita at UAB, she continues to serve as the coordinator of training of volunteers for the UAB Safe Zone program.

Andrew (Andy) Duxbury, M.D., is an associate professor of Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine at UAB School of Medicine and Medical Director of UAB Geriatrics at the new Spain-McDonald Clinic. His interests include elder wellness and community oriented elder health issues. Having been involved in numerous research and educational projects related to elder health, he is a well-known speaker on topics related to the health and well-being of older adults. Dr. Duxbury also serves as a volunteer in the UAB Safe Zone program.

10 – 11am Sharing our Stories: How to craft compelling personal narratives for the media

Alex Shoor, GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance against Defamation)

This workshop will help instruct folks on how to take a personal experience and turn it into a story that will entice the media and be persuasive to the larger audience it reaches.  We will discuss how to build a personal story that is "media ready" and analyze examples of LGBT advocates who have done exactly this.  In groups, we will share personal stories with one another and then evaluate the effectiveness of them by adopting the perspective of a mainstream media audience.

11am-Noon Mock Interviews: Practice to Prepare for Perfect Interview

Alex Shoor, GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance against Defamation)

Nothing can be scarier than doing an interview!  In this workshop, we will jump straight into useful strategies on what to do when you are contacted by a reporter, and how to prepare for an interview.  We will then break into smaller groups to prepare a "spokesperson" from each group to do a 3 minute mock interview on an issue facing the Alabama LGBT community in front of the entire group.  With Alex playing the role of a reporter, we will then discuss what that spokesperson did well and how she/he could improve.

1 - 2pm First Steps of Media Advocacy: Letters to the Editor

In this workshop, we will provide folks a solid framework on how to write and send in a letter to the editor (LTE).  We will discuss the basic goals and overall strategy in writing a LTE.  We will offer tips on the Do's and Don'ts when crafting such a letter.  The workshop will provide general details on the format of a LTE and specific instructions on how to submit a letter.  We will then analyze real examples of effective versus problematic letters.

10am-Noon Spirituality, Patriotism and Homosexuality

Jeff Key, actor and activist, traces how his southern upbringing led him to his current activities.  His presentation will include background on his work in movies, how he came to join the Marines and what led him to develop his journals into a stage play.  The focus will be on his current passions and how they are portrayed on stage in his play “The Eyes of Babylon”.

10-11am I am a real life youth activist.

Alabama native Jonathan Awtrey, shares his story.  

In the spring of this year Jonathan traveled the country on the Soulforce Equality Ride, a faith based group of young adults ranging in age from 18-28 with a common goal of searching for equality.  For two months, he and the other Riders visited Christian colleges and military institutions seeking dialogue with students and administrators, hoping to find a way to create safe and loving environments for gay, lesbian, ­bisexual and transgender persons.

11am - Noon Effective Online Organizing

Jonathan Awtrey and Zach Childfree - How to use Online tools for more effective organizing for your Campus Organization

1 -2pm Dealing with Hate on Campus  

Jonathan Awtrey and Zach Childree - The Radical Right is targeting youth with a message of hate.  What can you do?  Join us for a discussion on how to respond to hate on campus.

2 - 3pm Standing Together: Networking Student Organizations

Jonathan Awtrey and Zach Childree - Where do we go from here?  Join a discussion on how Student Groups and Active Youth can work together across the state to bring about change.

10am – Noon Protection from abuse proceeding and temporary restraining orders in Alabama

Private practice attorney Scott Holtham represents children, parents, and their family members in matters of delinquency, dependency (i.e. abuse and neglect), paternity and child support.  Also certified as a Guardian ad Litem, Mr. Holtham is court appointed to represent the best interests of children in proceedings relating to abuse and neglect.

1 - 3pm Estate planning including; wills, advanced healthcare directives, living wills, health-care proxies, and powers of attorney.  

Nancy Covington Hughes is a partner in the Birmingham law firm of Hughes and Scalise.  Principle areas of practice for the firm include tax and estate planning, estate and trust administration, charitable gift planning, and corporate and business succession planning.

1 - 2pm Gender Crash

Gunner Scott - How LGBT performance arts spaces and organizing for LGBT civil rights go together.  In this workshop Gender Crash creator Gunner Scott, will show the trailer of the documentary "Gender Crash" and talk about creating LGBT cultural spaces that support and enhance LGBT civil rights organizing.

2 - 3pm Transgender Caucus

A round table discussion led by Gunner Scott.

1 - 2pm Gay Men’s Caucus

Stephen Williams, LPC leads an open discussion group for gay men.

2 - 3pm Lesbian Caucus

An open discussion for lesbians. Lead by Deagan Malone, LPC.

2 - 3pm Trends in HIV/AIDS

Karen Musgrove, Executive Director of Birmingham AIDS Outreach

3 - 4pm Alabama Issues

Howard Bayless, Board Chair of Equality Alabama will lead a frank discussion of Alabama Issues, including strategies for achieving full equality, what’s next in the legislature and what do we need to do as a community.

5:30pm Social/Networking/Silent Auction Fundraiser starts

Come talk to LGBT leaders from all over Alabama and bid on some FANTASTIC items ranging from vacations to jewelry to art to furniture. We will also have a separate youth reception and poetry reading specifically for our under 22 guests.  Also talk to our sponsors and vendors without whom we would not be able to provide this educational service.
