You may not think your story is very extraordinary, but it most likely is. The general population in Alabama doesn't think they know any gay people. They have no idea we raise our own and others children. They don't know we have jobs that protect and serve them. They don't know that GLBT Alabamians don't have the same basic civil rights as they do.
